In April 2022, An illegal wildlife smuggling attempt was intercepted coming into Sumatra. Authorities entrusted these animals into the care of Ellis Park Wildlife Sanctuary. At first, they thought there were a total of 1,300 animals until they woke to a bit of a surprise. An African Hedgehog, who must have escaped the smuggling crate before they did the count, was found checking out the rescued meerkats. And so now this little one was the 1,301 animal rescued. They gave him the name Rio Jnr, named after Ellis Park co-founder Femke's young son Rio, who had taken on the role of hedgehog carer.
Our 'From Rio with Love' greeting card is from an original watercolour and gouache illustration by Natalie Hrymakowski and was inspired by this sweet little hedgehog. A perfect card for a special occasion or for when you want to show someone you care.
